Saddle Bags
JRB likes to run a saddle bag on each hip. Anything we NEED must be attached to us. JRB is right handed and configures the saddle bags this way:
- The right saddle bag has the frequently used items: The Garda Hitch Footloop, put on top of a rangefinder. Because the Garda Hitch is usually on the rope during a sit, it makes the rangefinder easy to grab. During a hunt, its a great spot for our cell phone too. In colder weather, there might be an extra hat, gloves or facemask on the bottom of the bag. Be careful when removing the Garda to ensure that nothing else falls out.
- The left saddle bag has the infrequently used items, including a retrieval cord and a zip lock bag with emergency supplies, including a knife, spare carabiner and spare cordage.
Here are a few choices, and there are more at ACO:

ACO collection: Ape Canyon Packs & Bags
As a minimalist, JRB does not use a conventional backpack. It’s just too big, too bulky and is a hassle to take it off and put it on. This cross-body bag is available on Amazon. JRB has been using one for years. It’s a great design, rugged and can be kept on our body as we climb. There are two small outer compartments that JRB uses for SD cards and flashlight. There are two large vertical compartments with enough room for knife, drag, saw, shears, gut stuff, water bottle, food and even a trail cam. There are multiple patterns available and a couple provide decent camouflage, particularly the “Ferns” pattern. The actual product looks better than the image on the website in that regard:
