Rope Coiling & Storage

Contents:

Butterfly Coil

This is an old video, but still relevant: JRB uses a small Butterfly coil method to gather up a rope into a stable configuration for transport after usage. There are many variations, but in general:

  • Can be reliably executed in dark conditions
  • Creates a stable coil that won’t get messy
  • Will not get tangled when the rope is deployed
  • Does not cause the rope to get twisted

3 Hitch System: Coil &Transport

This video shows a specific usage of the Butterfly coil applied to the 3 Hitch system. It also covers how the coil can be worn on our back for transport.

Rope Storage in the Tree

In a hunting situation, we should never leave our rope hanging down to the ground. Deer WILL notice it. If there isn’t a crotch or branch in the tree to drape the dangling rope after a climb, JRB has devised a method for storage based on the Maverick Hitch (or Maverick variant) which offers the unique feature of retrievability in the event of an emergency or if the climber simply forgot to drop the rope before rappel:

General Rope Storage

During hunting season, JRB keeps his rope and hunting clothes in open air or a duffel bag in his vehicle, with the windows cracked to ensure fresh air circulation. Often, a natural scent source will be added to the bag such as some branches from a scented tree like pine, sassafras or viburnum. (Consider what is indigenous to your area.)

For long term storage, JRB uses a large, antique crate to store them, ensuring that they are completely dry before putting them in storage.
