Attachment Systems

Page Contents:

Introduction

This page covers any kind of attachment systems for attaching something to the tree, including:

  • Platform
  • Climbing Stick
  • Gear, Bow, Weapon

Additionally, it addresses multi-function systems which are also capable of positioning the climber.

Multi-Function Devices (MFD)

JRB prefers to carry a single device capable of multiple functions.

MFD, with Rotational Redirect

Introduced in 2025, this device is capable of acting as a Lineman’s Belt, a Gear/Bow Hanger, and has the capability to redirect our climbing rope, allowing us to rotate around the tree into any position.

Triple Function Lineman’s Belt

This 2024 introduction of a “Triple Function Lineman’s Belt” demonstrates how it can also function as a Gear Hanger and can be used to redirect/deflect the climbing rope closer to the trunk, when the crotch is higher than ideal. The Lashing Knot described below can be used in this and similar designs.

Platform Attachment

Although most platforms have one attachment point, the methods below can be modified to work with platforms with two. If a platform was designed for use with one attachment point (receiving tension from both sides evenly), we should not assume it is OK to tension it from one side only.

BHT Platform Attachment

This 2025 video demonstrates JRB’s current preference for platform attachment. The links to the videos for the necessary knots are cited in the video description. Materials needed:

  • 10-12′ of 8mm Rope
  • 16′ of 6mm Cord
  • A small piece of 1″ tubular webbing

Mechanical Advantage System

This 2023 video demonstrates how JRB designed a platform attachment system with mechanical advantage system.

Gear Attachment

A choked maverick hitch along with the Lashing knot can be used to create a simple, effective and inexpensive gear hanger. Also, see the Multi-Function Devices listed above.

This variant of the Cow Hitch Square Lashing is great for tying a hook onto a horizontal line, in the creation of a Gear Hanger or Bow Hanger. See the Shopping List page for recommendations on inexpensive bungee cords with suitable hooks.

Stick Attachment

Although the platform attachment methods can be used for sticks, a simple Longhorn Agile or JRB Ascender hitch can be used for stick or platform attachment. The JRB ascender is preferred due to its shorter length, reducing possible contact with the bark by the top coil of the friction hitch.
